Smoke test tubes contain a brown-orange material impregnated with smoke sulfuric acid. When air is pumped through the tube, with the help of a rubber blower, an aerosol of sulfuric acid in the form of white smoke comes out. The density of the smoke generated by sulfuric acid increases with increasing atmospheric humidity. The smoke would not be visible, if it were generated in a completely moisture-free air.

The vials, once used, can be inerted with water and then disposed as special waste.
Tubes can be used within a temperature range between 0 and 40 ° C and a humidity from 3 to 50 mg/l (corresponding to 100% relative humidity at 40 °C).

Reaction principle: H₂S₂O₇ + H₂O = H₂SO₄ aerosol

control of the air flows in laminar flow hoods
monitoring of ventilation, air conditioning, painting
identification of gaps
evaluate the airflow near extractors
leak testing of containment systems (including Glovebag technique)
approximate evaluation of the speed, by means of observation of the form taken by the smoke
